Radau vėtros nulaužtą beržą ir balto lino (II) I found a fallen birch and white linen (II)

On the shelves at home, there were pieces of white linen that my mother’s mother had brought home from the “Linas” factory 50 years ago. They seemed to be looking at me, and I had the idea to dye and make use of them. A storm came, bringing down a birch tree next to my home, and giving me the opportunity to use its leaves for dyeing the linen.

Recipe used:
200 g (later added another 600 g) of linen, 800 g of birch leaves.
Preparing the dye. Pour hot water over the birch leaves and leave them overnight. The next day, simmer for one hour. Strain.
Preparing the linen. Boil the linen for one hour with a teaspoon of washing soda. Rinse. Then simmer for another hour with a tablespoon of alum.
Dyeing. Place the linen in the dye bath and simmer for up to an hour, then leave it to soak. The linen turns a rich yellow colour. Dip it into an iron solution to turn the fabric green. The longer it is left in the solution, the deeper the green becomes. The dye was very rich, so I added more and more pieces of linen. Each one turned out a progressively lighter shade of green.

Later, I made myself a shirt from these linens in different shades, cutting the pieces in a way that made the most efficient use of the fabric. I also made a bag for my mother to take with her when she goes to the forest. Praūžė audra ir nuvertė beržą prie pat mano namų - pasirodo, beržo lapai šiaurės kraštuose istoriškai naudojami dažymui.

Naudotas receptas:
200 g (vėliau dar 600 g) lino, 800 g beržo lapų.
Paruošti dažus. Beržo lapus užpilti karštu vandeniu ir palikti nakčiai. Kitą dieną pavirinti valandą. Nukošti.
Paruošti liną. Liną valandą virinti su šaukšteliu sodos. Išskalauti. Kaitinti dar valandą su šaukštu aliuminio druskos.
Dažyti. Įmerkti liną į dažus ir pavirinti iki valandos, palikti pabūti - linas nudažytas sodria geltona spalva. Įmerkti į geležies tirpalą, kad audinys taptų žalias. Kuo ilgiau laikai, tuo žalia sodresnė. Dažas buvo labai sodrus, dėl to dėjau ir daugiau atraižų, kiekviena gavosi vis šviesesnės žalios spalvos.

Praėjus metams, radau, kaip šiuos audinius panaudoti. Pasiuvau sau marškinius iš skirtingų spalvų atraižų, kerpant taip, kad medžiaga būtų panaudota kuo talpiau. Taip pat pasiuvau krepšį mamai, skirtą ėjimui į mišką.
